I use East Tether Pro because I connect to https sites. You can try the lite version for free. Unlimited trial for the lite version. I found the pro version on Amazon for $5.00. This is a usb tether option and works fine.

I've run into this a few time myself. go to settings and then application settings, select development and make sure the box for USB debugging is unchecked. plug your usb back in and it ought to connect.
