Settings, apps. Click the app. Then battery. make sure allow background activity is turned to on

Check you don't have "restrict background usage" ticked for the apps. I went a bit mad and selecting for loads of apps thinking it would just apply when it's not running. Turns out it will not allow the app to run at all if the screen is not on, I was getting drop nuts on spotify and other music...
