I appreciate that, but as I mentioned to Laura above, YouTube Red is not available in the UK otherwise I would have gotten it. But it's fine. I'll learn to live without this feature. There's many more much more exciting things to explore on Android. Thanks everyone for your help!

Sure, I understand. Even if they didn't for instance remove ads, I still think background playing capabilities is a no-brainer. Or am I being a bit spoilt? Holding a phone with the screen open while you listen to something for 10 mins or longer can be a bit of a pain.
