I'm having the same issue. I also have an issue where my phone will occasionally get stuck in landscape mode as well. Went through the Support process and I have a replacement on the way. Interesting that it seems to be a software issue but Google's techs didn't have me try to uninstall any updates.

I held it down for much longer, actually saw the gear spin but it wouldn't unlock until I enabled Developer Options. So maybe that's not a requirement, but I had the same experience as the OP and that unlocked it for me. Worth a shot.

You have to turn Developer Options on first before being able to access the System UI. Go to Settings > About Phone. Then tap Build Number until it says you are now a Developer. Then do the settings gear part and you should unlock UI Tuner.

You can use it to create GIFs as one benefit. Another would be that you could take multiple pictures and then flip through and choose the best quality image.

You would notice a difference in USB 3.1 and 2.0 in data transfer rates. The Nexus devices support USB 2.0 and fast charge. 3.1 is compatible with 2.0, might as well buy 3.1 to be future proof.

I would imagine this will work. The USB standard is in the cable not the adapter, I can't confirm but I can't think of why it wouldn't work.

I think you'll have to call Google Support, there doesn't seem to be an option to add it after the fact or purchase it separately on Google's site.
