Update, 2 weeks later, the problem has returned! Although sync works now, I have to manually sync it to get it to work.

Thank you so much, this problem was driving me insane! Gmail sync is now working perfectly since following your post above. It's like a hidden menu!

I agree with Brosko in that I think the rollout has been pulled, and judging by the amount of threads on the Nexus support forums with exactly this problem, I think it's becoming more credible. Here's a copy of the message I posted there which is also relevant to this thread:
