I was having the same issue with my new Galaxy S5 (from AT&T. I'm coming from an iPhone 4, so I'm still learning). My email with attached photos was sitting in the outbox forever. My workaround was to use Yahoo Mail instead of Gmail. This might or might not be a solution for every body, but...
