I just now tried the +before the number and it worked flawlessly. Perhaps you not pressing the right arrow afterwards, or this has since been fixed since you posted this last year. In my case I was trying to get my phone balance which is BAL to 7243, and got it by entering +7243 for the number.

If you use Hangouts, you can remove yourself from the group chat on a PC. Sign into hangouts on your PC with the same account you use on your phone (google/gmail account). When signed in, open the group message, click the gear icon, and then click 'leave'. No more group messages from that...
