Just got my N7(13) to cast without incident. Suggest removing the YouTube app from Fire and reinstalling it from the cloud, as it may have become corrupt.

There are latency/"stickiness" issues with the standard remote that make action-based game play difficult. Data-entry games (word or trivia types, for instance), though, should work ok.

Google the "Nexus Root Toolkit". It will let you switch to any build your Nexus model has ever supported, from 4.3.x on.

I performed a factory reset recently (and reluctantly, only because Play Store got borked in an SD card failure). All it did was restore the rooted (and Link2SD-modified) ROM I was using.

With the Hub apparently offline for good this time, does anyone know where (or even if) the downloads it used to offer could be found? I'm looking in particular for the Chinese New Year skin (and, no, the XDA version doesn't install on this phone).

On the Nexus 7 (2013), make sure the receiver is turned on, go to settings > display > cast screen, tap the menu dots, check "enable wireless display", then go to the Fire settings and enable screen mirroring there. Works like a charm, with a lag of less than half a second.
