I went into developer mode and changed the Default USB configuration to 'Transfer Files'. Still no go. With Android Auto you MUST connect via USB and Bluetooth. The bluetooth connects.

I've tried 100 different ways to get the car to recognize the phone. I'll try turning if off as you say.
