I think, what they need to do is make some sort of gesture to hide the buttons and bring them back when desired. Maybe if enough people ask for it, Goog will incorporate it in a future update.

Very simple. Everyone I know and love is very far away. 3000 miles. I am away from everyone this holiday. I would use the phone to talk to my parents, my brother, my grammy, my niece, and my friends. I would let everyone know that I am thinking about them. That I miss them. And, that I love them.
