Try GoSMS. It has a ton of settings and themes that let you customize it to the look you want. My favorite theme is the Black Minimal theme but there's an iPhone theme as well.

Are you using the Pop-up notifications from handcent? If you have pop-up and unlock the device enabled it will cause your phone to wake from sleep and drain the battery if you don't respond in a timely manner. This is the main reason I switched to GoSMS.

Its pretty easy to remove typos from swypes dictionary and even easier in the new version, v3 I believe. Try it out I liked it much more than v2. I personally use gingerbread keyboard. There are some great themed versions out there for those who like blue on black or any other combination.

I bought a new spare battery for $5 when I started having horrible battery like yourself. That fixed it, turns out my 7 month old battery was just worn out. Just be aware that its not a samsung made battery but works great anyway.
