I managed to get my iPhone family to use Allo and now it is going to be discontinued. So I am using Allo until it's gone. For non Family I am using Messages.

I've gotten used to the gestures on the Pixel 3xl so will stick with the Pixel launcher. Nothing against Nova since I have that on my Nexus 6p but so far I like the Pixel launcher just fine.

I thought I heard that in Android 9 the phone would learn over time what apps are frequently used and then close those that are not used alot. If so perhaps this is something that will improve overtime with frequent use.

I don't upgrade every year so I'm coming from a Nexus 6p that is working OK. So I'll be buying the 3 XL

Thanks to everyone that has replied to my question. I guess I'll give Fi a try,although I'm not sure how good TMobile is. I checked the coverage map and it seems that coverage is all around me so that's good.

lol. The Fi site says it chooses between TMobile, Sprint or Consumer Cellular, but maybe it only does that if it has to? How is speed and coverage on TMobile where you live?

Moved to a more active section of the site

just received OTA update to 8.0. after the update I cleared the system cache then restarted the phone. Right now the phone is flying and more responsive than before the update. Maybe time will tell, but right now it is good.
