Me too. I had the same as you with the red '!' symbol bit moving my finger even higher up the screen 'fixed' it for me. Will let you know if I get anything from Google 1 support.

I may have just chanced on a workaround. Try placing your finger higher than the fingerprint picture. It 'works' for me. Come to think of it on my phone the fingerprint overlay presented by the apps seems to be condensed compared to the overlay presented at phone logon. Anyone have any ideas?

I've logged a support query through my Google 1 subscription. Build number is SP2A.220305.013.A3. Security update was 5th March but the issue only started to appear about 3 days ago.

I've got exactly the same problem. Fingerprint works 'fine' to get me into the Pixel 6 but fails on any app that uses fingerprint authentication (banking apps). Clueless as to what has changed in my setup bar security patches.
