Thanks for responding! The reason I asked is because without activation the Wi-Fi function is disabled in such a way that the initial setup of the phone cannot be performed. I am trying to set this up (updates, config, apps etc) for my niece as a Christmas present.

Please tell me... What happens to your smartphone when the monthly service expires? Do all functions of the phone stop such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth etc or just the ability to make and receive phone calls? Just purchased a Samsung Galaxy J3 Sky (2016) but don't know if I want to keep it. Thanks!

Just to elevate this problem a little. With my NEW Galaxy S4, I cannot connect to Wi-Fi at home or at work. I have confirmed that it works on a non-secure Starbucks location. Now it could be argued that the router should be updated. HOWEVER, my employer will not replace their router just to help...
