Just solved my own problem. It evidently MUST be plugged into an actual USB charging block. It will not charge when plugged into a monitor or computer USB port. Evidently a power supply issue.

I just bought a 'new' battery for my Samsung Tab S 10.5 on eBay. The old battery would not hold hold a charge any longer after several years of use. The replacement battery was list as new and appeared to be so. After swapping it out, the new battery showed 22% charge. It began to quickly...

Had the same problem with a brand new Tab 10.5 S . Took forever to charge. Finally noticed a red 'X' over the battery icon. Changed the USB cable that came with the unit. Works like a charm now.
