You can read any ePub from any vendor (as far as I know) on the Nexus 7 with the appropriate app. This includes B&N, Kobo and even mobi files from Amazon. There are several nice apps for non-DRM epubs that you can use that are far more customizable than anything you can get from B&N, etc.

Make sure you have the latest update to Kingsoft (5.9.X). I was having a problem opening spreadsheets with KS 5.8.X) and my Nexus 7 (2012) and 4.4. The update fixed my problem.

The Nexus 7 is fine for reading ebooks. There are several apps that are good for reading ePubs (I use Moon+). The Kindle app is merely OK, but it's not exactly feature-rich. Some people will say that eInk readers are better on the eyes than LCD screens but you will have to decide for yourself...

I tether my Nexus 7 with my phone. I use the Nexus in combination the 3G connection almost exclusively for getting maps and location info when I'm out geocaching. The 4.3" screen on the phone isn't as easy to use as the 7" screen for the info I use.
