I haven't run into any battery life problems yet. If anything, I am getting better battery life than before. Is there something specific that triggers the Google Play service to go nuts?

As another option, I store a bunch of media on a NAS unit that my Macs can access via smb or afp. Thought I was out of luck with the Chromebook, but remembered that here is a web interface as well. It is kind of crumby but works to get content onto my Chromebook by way of the local network.

For anyone else who has this question: Go to Settings, then at the bottom click the link for "Show advanced settings." Then hit the "Powewash" button. I haven't tried it, but I assume it will ask you to confirm and then nuke all the user data.

In settings there is a button for advanced sync options. Do you have open tabs checked on all your Chrome instances? I had a weird thing happen once where I had to re-open chrome on all my devices as the list of open tabs was empty. The option still showed up though...

Open a new tab, look at the bottom right of the screen for "Other devices."

I love my MBA but its battery life does suck. Even with the SSD.

Love my Samsung and well worth the money. I also love my Macbook Air but let me say: don't put Linux on your MBA. It is really unstable. I ended up putting OS X back on it when I got tired of it crashing.
