Google Voice would be a separate phone number that you can call anyone with and they can call you with it. I don't know if Skype does it for free or not. Not a perfect solution, but at least a way to call someone.

I believe you are then using your Google Voice number. Which I guess the OP could do, have his Verizon number forward to a Voice number when he is in a bad cell area? Not sure how easy that is to set up and turn on and off, or if it's possible. But I guess it's kind of a work around if it works...

Is it telling you that it has failed too many times? I think after 5 failed readings it forces you to use your pin/pattern.

I only rarely am asked to put my PIN in. Fingerprint does the trick from screen off right to my homescreen. Occasionally it will ask for my PIN anyways, not sure if it's a bug or a security thing where they want the PIN after so long(not counting after a reboot). Apps that need a PIN or...

Well it is a local music player, isn't it? I haven't tried it. But if it's local only, then yes you would need the music files on your phone. Which you can transfer with the USB cable from a PC or with any number of apps that can help do that.
