Do you have Samsung Pay chosen as your preferred method by any chance? That might explain it.

The one place I don't use Samsung pay is at the supermarket, because my Chase MasterCard gets double points at supermarkets, but Samsung pay is only compatible with Chase Visa. Also, I eat out fairly regularly at restaurants where it isn't possible to use the phone.

I used a debit card today at Safeway, and nothing different, although I used it as an actual debit with PIN entry not in credit mode. Cashier didn't ask for my card number.

I think what he means is that chip enabled machines, ones where the slot is active, read the chip inside, so that he is afraid Samsung Pay would be useless there being unable to make contact. (Target for example)

I've had trouble at Safeway. Seems their terminals have the swipe on the right perpendicular to you, rather than the swipe channel facing you, making it more difficult for the phone and the terminal to communicate - am I doing something wrong?

Yes, you should have put your phone on the NFC field just like Apple pay folks do.

When I first switched over from Google Wallet to Android Pay, I was totally unable after many tries to add the Chase MasterCard from my Google Wallet. However, recently, all of a sudden, I was able to do so.
