I love the new launcher! At last it treats photos in a sensible way when you set them as wallpaper - I used to hate the way the old launcher distorted my photos. It seems to make the leftmost homescreen the default which is a bit weird but I guess it's so Google Now is always a swipe to the right.

Welcome to Android's most annoying thing. The wallpaper needs to be wider than you would think because you pan across it as you swipe homescreens. There are threads here discussing the best pixel size for wallpaper. Also there are apps which tweak the way it works.

I like K-9 Mail. Not quite as pretty, but great features.

You could get the Kindle app from the Amazon appstore. Then buy Kindle books.

Re the rotation - you know it is switched off by default? Swipe down from top-right and hit 'rotation locked'.

'Niggle' is a pretty common word in the UK - I guess it hasn't crossed the pond yet? I don't really understand why it should take 20 seconds to turn on when I only have to hold the button down for like 3 seconds on mine. Why is there such a difference?

Easiest way is simply add a PIN to your Google Play account, then she can't buy stuff herself.

Check Settings /Sound / Volumes, see what that all looks like.
