holy moly!! I cannot believe that I have spent weeks trying to figure this out and it was that tiny checkmark on the right side of the brightness lever switch that was making me want to cry all this time! I thought it was my marshmallow update. just checked "off" auto brightness and all is good...

This seemed to have fixed my problem of it turning off 1 second after a notification on my lock screen although I have not timed it to see if the actual 3 minute setting I have it on will stay on for 3 minutes. I put it on 30 seconds and it would shut off in about 5 seconds so I guess 3 minutes...
