That seems to change the SSID, i.e. the name of the tethering network using the device as an access point, rather than the hostname of the device on any other network. This is not about tethering.

And it should not be necessary to root when the only change required is to the hostname.

But it seems to be exactly what is required. I think of the Nexus more as a networked computer than a telephone, and this facility is just expected in a computer.
