Followup: I ran the "Spectroid" spectrum analyzer app and it shows a clear highpass effect right around 100Hz, which makes me suspect something's going on internally, so I'm still not sure this mic is purely mediocre. Could be a combination of factors.

I notice that the new camera panorama feature in Android ICS (4.0.3) stops taking pictures long before you can rotate the camera a full 360 degrees. It seems to allow roughly 180 degrees, and if you pan too fast it won't keep up. The timer runs out and the images start sticthing automatically...

"Press and wait" seems like good advice. I knew there had to be a trigger you could send to the OS. I still think touchscreens are overrated except for portability, battery life and the cool-factor. A mouse takes a lot less effort and is more precise.
