Sorry I should have stated lowered slightly. This previously wasn't the situation for me. Now the music volume is slightly reduced, the notification plays over the top, and the music volume increases again. It’s a very similar experience to my old HTC M7 and M8.

The "Don't Pause!" app has provided an automatic work around for me. I upgraded to the pro version. It auto detects headphones, or a bluetooth device, and stops notification sounds while playing music. Thank you tosinwashere.
