The factory reset worked - all seems back to normal now.

Thanks for the responses! I tried getting into safemode by powering it with both volume buttons pressed, but this didn't solve the issue. I made it to the boot menu, and applied a factory reset, and now I'm just waiting for the updates to install. Hopefully when that's done, the tablet will...
