Thanks! I did get it to work eventually by holding the power button on for a reaaaally long time -- way longer than I had tried previously. This is the first time I've ever even seen this charge screen since I got the phone several months ago.

Thank you all for the feedback. I should have been able to figure this out myself, I guess, but hadn't yet realized that my old HTC marketplace was really the "new" Google Play. I will likely update some applications at some point, but I don't want to be reminded every hour that updates exist...
