My sim card is only 2 years old. But this phenomenon has happened to me for the last 9 years. Ever since my first smart phone.

It shows that it switched to 2g or 3g. I can still send and receive a sms as well as receive or make calls. I do have data roaming as an option but it is not switched on. In the town where I stay I have full bars 4g+.
