You don't have to pay anything to tether your phone. There are a few free apps on the market and all you need is a cord to plug into your laptop/computer.

You can tether with your usb cord to a laptop or desktop. You'll be running at 3g speeds though.

You can actually set a time delay to sync email during non peak hours. I have non peak set for 11pm to 7am. Then I set the sync time for 8 hours. No emails till morning. You can find that option under accounts and then options for each individual email account.

Check things on yahoo's end. Sometimes you need authorization to be linked to yahoo. It might show up but when the server is queried it won't pull anything off. You can also try and check the sync settings. The only other thing after that is uninstall and reinstall the newest version...

Go into the settings for Gmail and turn off the sync. It won't be able to delete off your system.
