POP3 email problem post-update: It stopped downloading email messages after 24 hours. It is not rooted and the problem only began after the update. It worked for a short while and has stopped again. Any suggestions? Anyone else encountered this?

Doing a factory reset did fix the widget problem for me. Since it's a work phone, I would first talk with your IT dept (or whoever runs the servers) to see if they can shed some light on if it's backed up by them or who.
