I know this is a little off-topic, but do you actually need an unlockable bootloader to root? or do you only need this if you were to install a custom rom? Also, when rooting, is it possible to re-enable these disabled features under the same kernel?

To add to that, on the TMobile version, I also cannot adjust the brightness slider when it is set to Auto. Is the US the only country where carriers have a culture of crippling and bloating phones like this? I recall there was a similar discussion in another thread with regards to the FM radio...
