I believe they did change this with the latest update. It used to be that you couldn't use it on a rooted device, but I think you can now.

You are correct, when you unlock your phone, it erases everything (including SD storage) so you have probably had an unlocked bootloader since you got the phone and just never noticed.

When you try to get into the bootloader, are you holding Volume UP & Down, or just down? If you just hold Volume Down and boot up, it boots in some other recovery mode. Hold both Up and Down and then select Recovery Mode. The link to re-download Wug's is in the sticky at the top of this forum...
