So - it looks like I'm not going to update to 52/53 yet :)

Question: I'm on a Samsung Galaxy 5. Super happy to have found this thread. Downgraded to 27 ... now, if I upgrade again ... will new contacts *continue* to sync? Or,does this fix just enable current connections to be synced; and then -- future connections are not synced?

*SOLVED* - for me, it was as simple as opening/accepting Google Plus on my phone. I deleted my existing "ME" contact and when I opened Google+, it immediately populated.

I have the same problem. On my Droid Incredible, *my* photo (from Facebook) was always synced directly to the phone. Now, on my Droid Razr Maxx, I just get the grey box. I've added a photo to Google+ -- added myself as a contact (and deleted myself, when that didn't work). I'm still on ICS...
