I had to root the phone to put the Android Market on the Fire. Once the Market was showing in my Apps, I then unrooted. I've grabbed several apps from the Android Market since. There do, however, remain apps that still seem to need to be sideloaded to install.

I've got the YouTube app on my droid phone, so used Astro File Manager to back up the APK, sideloaded it onto the Fire, and it works great.

In the case of video from DVD, I ripped dvd to MP4 format on a PC, then hooked the Fire to the PC with USB and copied the MP4 to a "Video" folder on the Fire. I use the ES File Explorer app on the Fire to open the Video folder, then select the video to play. So if you have the desired video on...
