I have the same problem, without paying for ad removal this app is unusable, even after paying you still get tons of ads disguised as news... quite a shady practice from AC, but I learned to live with those... but now I cannot even pay to remove ads abymore, get the error too...

Have you checked how much free space you have? Maybe the internal storage is full of pictures or other things? A direct competitor for Evernote would be Microsoft OneNote, but if it is only lists you want there are tons of apps that specialize in that like Our Groceries, Out of Milk, etc...
