Yes you can. I just set one up to be a small tablet/MP3 player. In settings, wireless & networks, turn off mobile network. You will still be able to get online with wireless. You will have to have a Gmail acct on it to get update/new apps from the play store.

The update defaulted to phone calendar, go onto settings and tell it to use your Google calendar. I had the same problem and that fixed it.
