Regarding Bose headphones. I have QC3's and the in-ear ones (I forget the model number) Both are noise-cancelling and both of them have hiss and crackling in the left ear when the noise-cancelling is turned ON. If I turn it OFF then there's no hiss or crackling. I took to using the earphones...
