I now own a Z3C and, with the exception of the very first use, the menu bar only appears when requested.

Sorry, not sure that there is much more detail that I can add. It turns out that the Z3 uses the Nova launcher, and the Z3 Compact I guess is just standard. That is why they behave differently.
