It has worked for me on my S8 it was driving me nuts too!

It can be disabled. I just figured this out today.... 1- Swipe down from the top of the screen to the quick menu. 2 - Click on the word portrait/auto-rotate below the icon and this opens up settings for auto rotate. Make sure you press the word below and not the icon.... 3 - Turn off 'rotate...
