At least for me, it's not dim, it just doesn't come on at all if it "goes to sleep". If I manually shut off the screen, it acts normal.

I just noticed this myself. On a regular charger (non quick charge), I'm seeing no LED indicator. I just tested something - When the screen goes off on it's own, no LED. When I press the power button to turn off the screen, I get the red LED charge indicator.
