HTC rep is wrong. I've been using one for the past week. Always turn off the display by closing the case. If I open the case, the M8 asks for my credentials.

You might try and use "Android File Transfer." Download it to your mac. After download, power off the mac. Then connect the M8 to one of the external ports on the Mac. Then restart the Mac. When it boots up, it should recognize the M8 and, from there, you can move files back and forth. Now...
