Install Nova Launcher and it will scroll again. The only problem then is that setting wallpapers from Gallery will only allow you to make a single screen crop. Just get a program like QuickPic and that will resolve that problem.

The phone should work regardless of your status with Verizon. At the very least, you'll have a fully functional device with no voice or mobile data connection. Did you hold the power button down to turn the phone on?

I would say that it gets "pretty warm" instead of "really hot." However, that was with non-stop heavy use today. Hasn't been too warm at all with regular use this evening.
