I just came from the 4S, and I bought the 1X on AT&T, kind of upset about the boot loader thing, was thinking of returning the phone.

I actually took mine back yesterday and was wondering about that same thing(multitasking). It seems like it works just like and iPhone would, faux multitasking is what I call it. And to go deeper on that, try watching YouTube and the go to the browser and then go back to YouTube, it starts over...
