Yup you're both right. Instagram does it right. It is a Facebook issue.

Yes. Didn't work. I even cleared the gallery app as default and set Google photos app as default for photos but other apps still insisted on using gallery picker when trying to upload photos. Bummer.

You might need to check two factor Auth and get an app specific password.
I also use hop email which has an icloud specific account setting. Still requires me to get an app specific password via appleid.apple.com

On iOS I used icloud photo library not Google photos. I did have Google photos on in the background syncing photos as a double measure. Now that I'm on Android (and enjoying it) I went to Google photos because it pretty much had most my photos...
