Yes, but probably not as simply as you may think. It requires root and installing a new launcher. I've made a thread here about how it's done.

Just posting in case anybody was interested. This launcher will replace the Browser shortcut with a Messaging shortcut. Nothing else is changed from the stock Gingerbread launcher.

I didn't have to create the "notifications" folder. It was already there with the "facebook_ringtone_pop.mp3" file inside. The "ringtones" folder though, I believe you have to create yourself.
Sure thing. I've added a notification sound instead of a ringtone (I wanted the official google talk alert), but it should be the same except replace "notifications" with "ringtones".

I tried Dolphin HD for a few minutes before trying Opera Mobile. I wasn't a fan of any of the color schemes for Dolphin HD so that turned me off quickly. Opera Mobile has a more streamlined, clean look.
