For the wifi you can try flight-mode on/off. That sometimes fixes my wifi problems on lollipop. But if you have alot of problems other than the wifi, you might need to factory reset your phone.

+1 BubbleUPnpP also has the ability to detect if the Chromecast supports the audio codec and transcodes the stream if needed. Second would be Allcast or Localcast.

If you only download apps from the play store and only from well known developers the probability you run into some malware is relatively small. If you plan to install random apks from outside the playstore you should install a antivirus app. It doesn't have one preinstalled.

Go ahead and buy it now. Even if you purchase after the L firmware release, it's not guaranteed that your device will have it when it arrives. Also because it's unlockable, you can always flash it completely fresh. In fact you can flash the 5.0 version already. So there are really no disadvantages.
