It worked. But I could not find a way to change the contacts I added. Also is there a way I could change the default so that new contacts do not get added to the google account by default.

The reason it stopped working was that Hotmail is being changed to Outlook.com. The solution to the problem is described the Hotmail forum. I could not get it to work, so I was able to delete the account and recreate it.
