I have had a similar experience. I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. It ran low on battery (1%) so I turned it off. Half an hour later I plugged in the charger and turned it on.. It took 5 minutes to boot, and when it had finished I was left with a blank screen, apart from the notification...
