As mentioned, Here works well for maps, and actually includes maps. The watch can show directions on the watch when the phone is using google maps, but will not show the map, just the next step in the direction.

I've noticed that if I am nonchalantly walking up the stairs it has less of a chance to register than if I climb at a normal pace. If I race up the steps, it seems to always register.

I upgraded from an LG V20 as well. Wow, what a difference! Same size but a whole lot more screen. You will not be disappointed! And if you are on Verizon, they gave me almost $300 for my LG V20 as a trade in!
