RIM works really really really hard to ensure their phones have the ability to hold on to a signal. They work so hard that all the bells and whistles and cutting edge features take a back seat. Other phone manufacturers aren't as obsessed with signal strength or battery life the way RIM is...

This has been the most annoying bug for me since the Gingerbread update. To fix the issue I go to Battery and data manager, then Data delivery, then uncheck Data enabled and Background data. After waiting a few seconds I check them again and I have blue bars (and Internet access) again.

You can go to "Options" > "About Phone" > "Status" and it will show what kind of network you're on under "Mobile Network Type". It shows "H+" in the status bar even on UMTS. UMTS is "3G" HSDPA is "3.5G" HSPA is "3.75G" HSPA+ is "3.9G"
