I found the culprit! 'app manager & app2SD'. Problem stopped on removing it, and the app review page is full of similarly unhappy people.

Hi all I have just moved to the HTC M8 from iPhone and am having some problems with the SD card. My phone only has 16Gb of internal storage and once all the apps and so forth are loaded on it's much much less, so I thought an SD card was a must - I have about 1500 photos I wanted to transfer...
